I’m so excited…

Okay, so anybody here who has EVER done stored procedure work in a database knows that stored procedures can be exceedingly tricky to debug. Well my favorite DBMS, PostgreSQL, has in their FAQ that version 8.3 may have a PL/pgSQL debugger! The folks at sqlmanager.net have had one of these for a little while but it’s kinda limited (no watch variables) and it’s proprietary. I’m super-stoked about this. Read the FAQ here.

I know most of you don’t care, but at least you could be happy for me. BE HAPPY FOR ME!

I think this is a most important feature.

    … SQL-standard updatable views

I’m not so sure about updatable views… I know Oracle has them, and folks like to pretend that Oracle is God’s gift to the DBMS, but updatable views to me just seem like a bad idea. If you need to update something like that, you may want to be using a stored procedure or something.

I don’t understand how someone could say the most important feature is something that is just a less powerful implementation of a feature PostgreSQL already gives you… ie. Rules. Don’t get me wrong, they would be nice to have, but most important feature?
