World’s Dumbest HR Recruiter Email…
So those of you who know me know that I recently considered an offer from a little company named Riverbed Technologies. Shortly after informing my current employer of the offer they’d made, they actually helped me meet my goals without the hassle of switching jobs. You see, my only reason for switching jobs was to be closer to family. Evidently Riverbed doesn’t deal well with disappointment, as I found this in my inbox today as I got home.
Now, for those of you who will inevitably say “no, Mike, this is a load of hooey. They didn’t really send you this, check out the image to the right. So without further ado, here’s the text of the message:
Mike, bad move on accepting a counter offer. Riverbed is by far a superior company with great technology that is going places. Plus, did you know that over 65% of people who accept a counter offer leave their job anyway after 6 months, because the reasons you are looking in the first place don’t automatically disappear or change. I try and coach people everyday that it is borderline career suicide to accept a counteroffer. You have your reasons, good luck.
This is unprofessional at best. I wonder if the HR department at Riverbed Technology understands that their recruiters are trying to bully and pressure people into taking their offers. It’s a shame that they think that this is an acceptable business practice. Enjoy kiddos.

what is that spam status? is this “almost” spam?
also, why are you committing career suicide?
Don’t know. Nobody ever told me that accepting the better offer on the table was career suicide. Oh well, I suppose I’ll have to live with the better job.
How selfish of you to get everything you need. Odd, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of Riverbed and their superior company.
I’ll form my opinion in 6 months
i have heard that people who accept counteroffers tend to leave their jobs w/in a set period of time (i’m not saying that you will . . .), but what that recruiter wrote is totally unprofessional. it just makes him and his company come off as whiny and immature.
just because you are offered a job does not mean that you have to accept it. people turn down job offers every day because not every job offer fits the needs of the employee. i know this . . . i work in HR. i sit next to a recruiter. i hear her go back and forth with candidates every day.
The guy was just mad that he didn’t get his bonus. You coming on board ment $$$ in his pocket… and you didn’t give it to him… hes a buster..
i was a recruiter for a while.
That was the standard training. Actually, they were supposed to give you that song and dance before you got the actual offer, to keep you on the hook.
I didnt see anything ‘bad’ about the email. Its probably some straight commission recruiter that just lost a payday.
If they were a strong recruiter they would have met with you to get you to change your mind, not whine about it via email.
