Morality in Media: Servant of God or Enemy of Freedom?

WARNING: This post contains a considerable amount of very serious religious content. If you are in any way offended by religious content, please do not read ahead as I wouldn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. If you do choose to comment, please do try to stay on topic.

Today I was made aware of the Justice Department’s contract with a certain group called “ObscenityCrimes.org” being run by a so-called interfaith group called “Morality in Media.” I am shocked, amazed, horrified, and disturbed by what I saw on their page. Not because I’m a libertarian pinko, but because I’m a Christian who knows a God who wants people to choose Him and accept His standards out of freedom and not out of government force.

Below is the letter I sent to Morality in Media just moments ago. I sincerely hope to see a real, well-thought-out response from them.

I am contacting you today as a Christian who is concerned that Morality in Media is marginalizing the cause of Christ. I have read the materials on your site, and I have read your flawwed legal excerpts, and I think that the crusade that Morality in Media is on is a noble, but detrimental one.

Morality in Media has stated that it is the place of the US government to control the behavior of individual citizens, to the point of criminal prosecution, and enforce the Law of God. I say to you that you are dead wrong. God’s law is God’s to enforce, not the US Government’s.

You seem to be pushing for a homogenized society where everybody is polite and obeys God’s Law, and everybody does so not because they love the Almighty and have chosen to obey out of love and out of devotion, but they do so for fear of government prosecution and criminal penalties.

This is not the way that our country was intended to be, and it is not what Jesus advocated on the cross when he died for forgiveness of sins. The world you are fighting for is not one that I want to raise my children in. Yes, pornography is harmful, but living a life controlled by the government is also harmful. Every time a law is passed to force the law of God on people, the choice they could have made to love God and follow His law is removed from them. I think that cheats God out of the love and affection that you and I give God freely.

I implore you to please cease and desist forcing Christian standards on our society. Our standards are not of this world, and God wants and deserves people who love and obey Him out of love and not out of fear of the US Government.

This is an open letter to Morality in Media, and shall be posted on my blog located at http://blog.notsosoft.net and I encourage thoughtful feedback. Thank you, and have a blessed day.
