When I was buying phones the first time around about four years ago I picked Verizon because I thought the network was somehow superior. As a tmobile subscriber I'm finding out that Verizon's network is not any better--in fact tmobile has better reception in the small town my wife's folks are from--so it would appear I fell prey to a bit of marketing there.
