OOXML and DRM and Wiretaps, oh my! Help Win the Fight.

Yesterday I complained about OOXML, and the corruption with which it has been approved of in the United States.  In response I had some folks discussing how to help those who are fighting this problem to win their fight… so here’s the how to help article.

I’m a CDROM-card-carrying member of the FSF, and I have been for a little while now (since August of 2006). I’ve supported the Defective By Design campaign through donation and protest (October 3rd of 2006).

Keeping up with the latest technologies and media is getting harder and harder lately, because the general public is under constant fire from the governments that are supposedly for them, and the companies that they thought they were doing good-faith business with.  The boundaries between motive and marketing are blurring, and law-abiding citizens are being targeted by a plethora of technologies and practices that are designed to remove consumer choice, not extend it.  These limitations reduce freedom, limit functionality, and enable publishing companies to blame consumers for their failed business practices.

Joining with the FSF and other groups that help fight for user rights and digital freedoms is essential to helping win the fight, so here’s a list of places you can go to donate to these groups:

Join the Free Software Foundation: http://www.fsf.org/join

Join or donate to the Electronic Frontier Foundation: http://www.eff.org/support

Donate to the Free Software Foundation (one of many programs): http://donate.fsf.org

Join the Free Software Foundation in Europe: http://www.fsfe.org/join

Donate to Save the Internet: https://secure.freepress.net/site/Donation2?1170.donation=form1&df_id=1170

These are certainly not the only groups worth supporting, they’re only the handful of groups I can think of.  If you can think of others, please post a link in the comments.

Do you honestly believe any organization promoting freedom will remain? Eventually, every organization (especially any who tries to sue the US government) is infiltrated and scuttled, or mired down until it doesn’t work as intended. Don’t believe me, just read history, especially many events in the 1960’s and groups who tried to spread freedom and different ways of doing things. This activity continues today, any group which tries to spread peace/freedom is infiltrated, especially if they meet in public at any time.

While not a shining gold example, look at NORML, they should be fighing to legalize marijuana, yet they rejected to help Jack Herer’s current efforts to legalize marijuana in one state. The very name of NORML and purpose is to legalize marijuana, yet they fail and have continued to fail in this effort for how many years?

It is all a joke. Go ahead, donate, try to spread freedom, but in the US there is simply no hope to go against the corporations, taxpayers contribute to shadow org. they don’t even know where all the money goes! It is a broken system.

Well if everybody who stands up for freedom is as cowardly as you are with your anonymous name and fake email address (email@manchicken.com isn’t very clever), it’s no small wonder groups fail. Not that I have anything against anonymity, but to post a conspiracy-laden whiny comment like this… well, at least you could have had enough balls to put a real email address or a first name.

I don’t really care whether or not this is or isn’t the way it is. Just because we have jaded cowards like you in the US doesn’t mean that those of us who aren’t too busy crying about the past can’t try to do something to change things.

Feel free to scream about me pointing out your cowardice. Leave your address if you like and I’ll mail you a box of tissues.
