RNC Fails to Discuss Anything of Substance…

So, I watched both conventions ad nauseam this past week.  I’m sure most of you can tell who I support already, but one thing I must remark on is the noticeable lack of substantive discussion of the issues at the Republican National Convention.  I thought they did a great job of quoting scripture and talking about family values and respecting veterans, but these are all things that they also did at the DNC.  One thing that I thought was disappointing was that the RNC speakers didn’t really compare McCain to Obama when it came to issues.  All they did was deploy smoke screens by saying “he has no experience.”  I would have liked to know how Obama–you know, the 12 years of public service he does actually have–compares to McCain on the issues.

This whole issue of Obama having no experience is a smokescreen, too.  Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and remained there until he won and moved into his seat on the US Senate representing Illinois in 2005.  And then let’s not forget his years of community activism.  Barack Obama received a law degree from Harvard and has actually practiced law before, while John McCain doesn’t actually have the equivalent of a bachelors degree, and the only legal practice he seems to have gotten was his divorce and then the time when he was investigated for corruption.  Barack Obama served as a professor of law at the University of Chicago as well… so while John McCain has more life experience, most of it seems to be in reminding people that he was a POW, cheating on his wife, changing his mind, forcing Native Americans off of their indigenous lands, and of course getting rich off of the family wealth of his second wife–who he cheated on his first wife for.

Another thing I thought was remarkable was how so many people recognized John McCain’s service during the DNC, and how nobody said anything less than venomous about Barack Obama during their speech.  Barack Obama even went out of his way during his acceptance speech to say that he wanted to talk about issues and discuss disagreements rather than using attack ads.  The GOP seems to think that smear campaigns are more effective… and they may be right.

John McCain likes to talk family values, but he doesn’t like to live them.  John McCain likes to talk about service to the troops, yet he opposes giving them more time at home between deployments to reduce PTSD and family strain (yes, there was such a vote, Obama voted Yea, McCain voted Nay).

John McCain is not fit to serve this country as President of the United States of America.
